Why Dating Feels So Different Now (and What It Means for You)
Sep 21, 2025If you have come back to dating after a long relationship, or simply after a break, you may have noticed that the rules seem to have changed while you were away. Why does dating feel so different now?
The short answer: more people are dating with clear intentions, small and consistent gestures are valued over grand ones, big conversations about money, family and the future are happening earlier, and apps are no longer the only place people expect to meet. Some of that makes dating easier. Some of it makes it feel more exposed. All of it gives you more room to choose than you might think.
1. Intentional dating has become normal
Not long ago, saying you wanted a serious relationship on a first date felt like breaking an unwritten rule. Now many singles say it openly. The dating apps even have a name for it: “loud looking”, being upfront about what you want so nobody wastes their time.
This is good news if you know what you are looking for. It is harder if you have been keeping things vague to avoid seeming too keen. Intentionality is not desperation. It is information, and it helps the right people recognise you.
The same applies the other way. If someone tells you clearly that they want something casual, believe them. I write more about this in Dating With Intention: What It Really Means.
2. Small gestures matter more than grand ones
Romance has become quieter. Remembering how someone takes their coffee, sending the article you know they will enjoy, checking in before their big presentation: these small, everyday gestures (sometimes called “micro-mance”) are what many people now say makes them feel chosen.
What sits underneath this is consistency. Big gestures are easy to make once. Small ones show you who someone is week after week. If you tend to be swept away by an impressive first date, this is a useful shift to lean into: pay more attention to what happens on an ordinary Tuesday than on the first Saturday night.
3. The big conversations are happening earlier
Money, job security, where you want to live, whether you want children: topics that used to wait months are now coming up in the first few dates. Rising living costs and global uncertainty have made many people less willing to invest in someone whose future does not fit with theirs.
This can feel intense, but it is really a move from dating by type to dating by values. You do not need to interview anyone. You do need to know what matters to you, so that when these conversations come up you can be honest rather than agreeable. If you are not sure where to start, the relationship values list is a good place.
4. Apps are one channel, and community is back
Many people are tired of swiping. Rather than giving up on apps altogether, a lot of singles are using them less and investing more in places where they meet people repeatedly: running clubs, classes, volunteering, interest-based groups.
That is especially true in Zürich, where connection tends to build slowly and through repeated contact rather than one great evening. If dating here has felt hard, read How to Meet Singles in Zürich (Without Relying on Dating Apps) and Six in Ten Swiss Singles Have Tried Online Dating – So Why Does Meeting Someone Still Feel So Difficult?
5. Chemistry is being questioned, not abandoned
More people are realising that the instant spark does not always predict whether a relationship will work. That does not mean attraction no longer matters. It means many singles are giving a second date to someone who felt calm rather than electric, and asking more questions of the ones who felt like fireworks.
Chemistry is the feeling. You give it the meaning. You can explore that difference in Chemistry vs Compatibility: Why They’re Not the Same Thing.
What has not changed
For all the new language, the fundamentals are the same as ever. People still want to feel seen, safe and wanted. Rejection still stings. Timing still plays a part you cannot control, and so does whether the other person is ready.
What you can control has not changed either: where you show up, how clearly you communicate what you want, what you respond to and who you choose to invest in. That is true whether you are a woman tired of mixed signals or a man who has thrown himself into his career and is wondering where the years went.
Not “do they choose me?” but “do I choose this?”
If you would like help turning that into a clear plan, that is exactly what we work on in 1:1 coaching, whether online or in person in Zürich.
