How to Know If Someone Is Right for You

how dating works Jul 15, 2026

“How do I know if they’re the right person?”

It’s one of the biggest questions people ask when dating. Sometimes it comes up after a few dates when everything feels exciting and you are wondering whether this connection could become something more. Sometimes it appears months into a relationship when you start thinking seriously about the future. And, sometimes, it comes after a relationship ends, when you look back and wonder how something that once felt so right did not work out - this is the version I have most experience in, from my dating life!

The truth is, knowing whether someone is right for you is rarely as simple as the movies make it seem. There usually isn’t one magical moment where everything suddenly becomes clear.

It is something you discover over time through connection, consistency and alignment.

Chemistry Is Important - But It Is Not the Whole Answer

Chemistry matters.

Feeling attracted to someone, enjoying their company and feeling excited to see them are important parts of a romantic relationship. That spark is often what creates the desire to explore a connection in the first place.

But chemistry alone cannot tell you whether someone is right for you.

A strong connection does not automatically mean you want the same things. A spark does not guarantee emotional availability. And attraction does not replace compatibility.

The question is not only:

“Do I feel something?”

It is also:

“What are we building together?”

Pay Attention To How You Feel Around Them

One of the biggest indicators of a healthy connection is not just how you feel about the other person, it is how you feel about yourself when you are with them.

Can you express your thoughts honestly? Can you communicate your needs? Do you feel respected, understood and able to show up as yourself?

Sometimes we become so focused on whether someone likes us that we forget to ask whether we actually like who we become in that relationship. The right relationship should not require you to constantly perform, prove your worth or abandon parts of yourself in order to maintain the connection.

Your Values Need To Align

Compatibility does not mean finding someone exactly like you.

In fact, differences can be one of the most beautiful parts of a relationship. Different interests, personalities, cultures and perspectives can expand the way we see the world and create opportunities for growth.

But your deeper values matter.

How do you approach family? What does commitment mean to you? How do you communicate during difficult moments? What kind of lifestyle do you want to create?

These questions may feel less exciting than chemistry in the beginning, but they often determine whether a relationship can actually work long term.

Compatibility is not about finding a copy of yourself.

It is about understanding whether two different people can build a life that works together.

Look At Actions, Not Just Potential

One of the easiest traps in dating is falling in love with potential.

You imagine who someone could become. You focus on how things might look one day. You hold onto the relationship you believe you could have together if only certain things changed.

But healthy relationships are built with the person in front of you today.

Of course people grow, evolve and change - that is part of life. But choosing a partner based mainly on who you hope they become can lead you away from seeing the reality of the relationship you are actually experiencing.

A powerful question to ask yourself is:

“If nothing changed, would this relationship still work for me?”

The Right Person Is Also About The Right Dynamic

We often talk about finding the right person, but relationships are not just about selecting someone with the correct list of qualities.

Relationships are something two people create together.

Someone might look perfect on paper, but what matters is the dynamic you build. How do you communicate? How do you repair after disagreements? How do you support each other through challenges? Do you bring out qualities in each other that you value?

A successful relationship is not only about who someone is.

It is also about who you become together.

Dating With More Clarity

The goal of dating is not to find someone perfect. Perfect does not exist.

The goal is to understand yourself well enough that you can recognise what is truly right for you.

Because the question is bigger than:

“Do they choose me?”

It is also:

“Do I choose this relationship?”

This is exactly why I created Design Your Love Life - a workshop for intentional singles who want to understand their values, patterns and the role they play in creating their dating outcomes.

Because finding the right person starts with understanding yourself.
