The Most Important Thing We Rarely Design
Jun 25, 2026We carefully plan our careers, finances and futures. So why do we often leave our love lives entirely to chance?
When was the last time you made a significant life decision without giving it much thought?
For most of us, the answer is probably "rarely."
We research before changing careers, we compare mortgage rates before buying a home. We think carefully about where we want to live, how we spend our money, and what we hope our future might look like.
We recognise that these decisions matter, so we approach them with intention.
Yet, when it comes to one of the most significant influences on our happiness, wellbeing and future - our romantic relationships - we're often told something very different.
"Don't overthink it."
"The right person will come along when you least expect it."
"If it's meant to be, it will happen."
While there is certainly an element of chance in meeting someone, I believe this narrative can leave us feeling more passive than intentional.
The Cost of Leaving Love to Chance
Many of us spend years hoping that the right relationship will simply appear.
But hope, on its own, isn't a strategy.
Without intention, it's easy to repeat familiar patterns, overlook what truly matters to us, or find ourselves making decisions based on chemistry, timing or loneliness rather than long-term compatibility.
This isn't because we're doing anything "wrong."
It's because very few of us have ever been taught how to approach dating and relationships intentionally.
What Does It Mean to Design Your Love Life?
Designing your love life isn't about controlling who you meet or guaranteeing a particular outcome.
Relationships will always involve uncertainty, vulnerability and factors beyond our control.
Instead, it's about focusing on the things we can influence.
It's taking ownership of how we show up, the choices we make, and the habits we build along the way.
It's replacing passive hope with purposeful action.
Three Ways to Become More Intentional
1. Know what you're building towards
Before looking for the right relationship, take time to understand what that relationship actually looks and feels like for you.
What values matter most?
How do you want your relationship to function?
What kind of life are you hoping to build together?
Clarity creates direction.
2. Understand your patterns
We all develop patterns through our experiences.
Some serve us well.
Others quietly keep us stuck.
Rather than asking, "Why does this keep happening to me?" try asking, "What might this experience be trying to teach me?"
Awareness is often the first step towards meaningful change.
3. Focus on what you can influence
You cannot control whether someone chooses to pursue a relationship with you.
You can influence how authentically you communicate, how intentionally you date, the boundaries you set, the people you choose to invest in, and the way you respond to setbacks.
These are the decisions that gradually shape your dating experience.
Love Deserves Intention
We don't need to remove spontaneity from dating.
We don't need to plan every conversation or predict every outcome.
But perhaps we can stop treating one of the most important parts of our lives as something that should simply "happen."
Because while we cannot control love, we often have far more influence over our relationship outcomes than we realise.
That belief is the foundation of my upcoming workshop, Design Your Love Life; a space for intentional singles who want to approach dating with greater clarity, confidence and direction.
If you're ready to become more intentional about the relationship you're creating, I'd love to welcome you.
If you’d like to stay in this conversation, I send occasional notes on dating and how modern relationships actually work.
