Why Do I Keep Dating the Same Type of Person?

relationship patterns Jul 01, 2026

One of the questions I hear surprisingly often is:

"Why do I keep attracting the same type of person?"

Perhaps your relationships all begin with incredible chemistry, only to leave you feeling emotionally disconnected a few months later. Maybe you repeatedly find yourself with partners who struggle to commit, avoid difficult conversations or leave you wondering why you're always the one putting in more effort.

When we notice these similarities, it's easy to assume we're simply unlucky.

But often, there's a little more to the story.

Although every relationship is different, many of us have patterns that quietly influence who we're drawn to. Most of the time, we're completely unaware they're there. We simply assume we're choosing each new partner independently, when in reality our previous experiences, beliefs and expectations often play a bigger role than we realise.

Familiar Isn't Always the Same as Compatible

One of the biggest misconceptions about dating is that attraction is always a reliable guide.

Chemistry is important, but it isn't the whole story.

Sometimes we're drawn towards what feels familiar rather than what's genuinely compatible. That familiarity can feel exciting, comfortable or even reassuring, even if those relationship dynamics haven't served us particularly well in the past.

This doesn't mean you're destined to repeat the same experiences forever. It simply means that recognising our patterns is often the first step towards changing them.

Becoming Curious About Your Dating History

Instead of asking yourself, "Why do I always attract the wrong people?", try asking a different question:

"What might my previous relationships be trying to teach me?"

Looking back isn't about dwelling on the past or blaming yourself. It's about noticing themes.

Were there similarities in the people you chose?

Did the relationships tend to end for similar reasons?

Was there a particular dynamic that kept repeating itself?

Approaching these questions with curiosity rather than criticism can reveal insights that are difficult to see while we're in the middle of a relationship.

A Question to Leave You With

If someone looked at your last three relationships, what similarities might they notice?

Sometimes, the first step towards finding a different relationship isn't meeting a different person.

It's understanding yourself a little better first.
