The Relationship Audit: Five Questions Every Single Person Should Ask Themselves

relationship patterns Jun 22, 2026

Many people approach dating by focusing on one question:

"Where can I meet the right person?"

But before we focus on where to meet someone, it can be helpful to pause and ask a different question:

"Am I clear about the relationship I want to create?"

The quality of our dating decisions often reflects the quality of our self-awareness. If you're feeling stuck, frustrated, or uncertain in your romantic life, these five questions may help bring greater clarity.

1. What Am I Actually Looking For?

This sounds simple, but many people struggle to answer it beyond broad statements such as "someone kind" or "someone who makes me happy."

Consider:

  • What values matter most to me?
  • What kind of lifestyle do I want to build?
  • What role do I want a relationship to play in my life?
  • What does a healthy partnership look like to me?
  • What would I like my life to look like five years from now?

The clearer your vision, the easier it becomes to recognise alignment when you encounter it.

2. What Patterns Keep Repeating?

If you look back across your dating history, are there themes that appear more than once?

Perhaps you:

  • Become attached quickly
  • Choose emotionally unavailable partners
  • Lose interest when someone shows genuine interest
  • Stay too long in situations that are not meeting your needs

Our past patterns are not failures; they are information and potential learning opportunities.

3. What Am I Tolerating That No Longer Serves Me?

Many people have stronger standards in their careers than they do in their relationships.

Take a moment to reflect:

  • What behaviours am I consistently excusing?
  • What red flags do I minimise?
  • Where am I accepting less than I truly desire?

Healthy standards are not about perfection; they are about self-respect.

4. What Would A Healthy Relationship Require From Me?

This can be a tricky one! It is easy to focus on the qualities we want in a partner.

A more challenging question is:

"What qualities would my ideal relationship require from me?"

Perhaps the answer includes:

  • Better communication
  • Greater vulnerability
  • More patience
  • Clearer boundaries
  • Increased emotional availability

Remember: relationships are co-created. The work is never only about finding the right person.

5. Am I Dating Intentionally Or Reactively?

Intentional dating means making decisions that move you towards the relationship you want to create.

Reactive dating often looks like:

  • Dating because you feel lonely
  • Continuing connections because they are available
  • Seeking validation through matches and attention
  • Hoping clarity will emerge later

The more intentional your approach becomes, the more likely you are to create experiences that align with your long-term goals.

Final Thoughts

The purpose of this audit is not to judge yourself. It is to create clarity.

Because clarity influences the choices we make, the people we invest in, and ultimately the relationships we create.

And often, the greatest gift in dating does not come from meeting someone new. It comes from understanding ourselves more deeply first.

If you'd like to explore these questions in more depth, Design Your Love Life is a live workshop for intentional singles who want to approach dating with greater clarity, confidence and direction
